Do you know about Beet Spinach?
Beet spinach also known as perpetual spinach,
Absolutely loved the summer of 2020 in spite of the lockdown because gardening has been awesome! While living in India I always wanted to attempt gardening but lack of space was a major problem, but when I moved to London, the moment I spotted the greenhouse in my backyard I knew I had to start my long-awaited passion for gardening. While I grew several plants like mint, coriander, tomatoes, beans, etc the most interesting plant that has outlived thee others to winter 2020 is my beet spinach plant (in the picture above in its full glory).
I planted the seeds in a seed starter in May 2020 and transferred them to a flatbed container in June end. Gardening sounds easy but it is a lot of work, especially watering them every day without fail. I realized that beet spinach grew bigger leaves every fortnight. I pluck the leaves every two-three weeks to give the smaller leaves enough space to grow. I did not use any fertilizers or extra food to nourish the plants chemically, instead, I water the plants with water used to rinse rice and lentils. I did try an online hack to use dried banana peel powder to nourish the plant or increasing the produce, but I could not see any difference hence, I would not comment on that.
Spinach beet tastes very similar to regular spinach, you can cook and store it the same way. I use mine to cook one-pot meals, spinach fritters, and plenty of salads. The nutritive value for it is similar to swiss chard. I would 100% recommend growing these at home. But make sure to water them well when temperatures soar or else they start wilting pretty soon, I had to water mine twice a day when London temperatures hit 35C this summer. Other plants I recommend growing at home are methi (fenugreek leaves), basil, mint, and coriander.
